Organic Goji Berries

Goji berries are the fruit of Lycium barbarum or Lycium chinense, both of the Solanaceae family (which includes, among others, the potato, tomato, aubergine, tobacco, chili pepper and nightshade).

The fruit is known in traditional Chinese medicine as Lycian Fruit, from Lycium, the name of the genus, which however derives from the Greek name of Lycia (Λυκία), a region of southern Anatolia, where the plant is believed to originate.

It currently grows spontaneously in the Himalayan valleys, in Mongolia, in Tibet, in the Chinese provinces of Xinjiang, Ningxia, and in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, but it is cultivated in many areas of China, where it is regularly used in traditional medicine.

The plant looks like a small shrub with very long branches from which originate, among the lanceolate or oval leaves that can be used to prepare infusions, first its lavender or pale purple flowers and then the oblong red berries, containing 10 to 60 yellow seeds.

They contain a very high quantity of vitamins , and in particular vitamin A and vitamin C. They are also rich in mineral salts: calcium, iron and sodium. They also provide our body with a high number of proteins.

Among these we find: alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, cystine, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, tronine, tyrosine. The carbohydrates contained in berries are mainly fiber (52%) and sugars.

However, there are few clinical studies relating to the therapeutic use of Goji berries. However, research conducted suggests that it could actually exert antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties , which can enhance the functioning of the immune system and which exert protective effects on the nervous system, liver and eyes.

Traditionally they are also used to prevent conditions such as diabetes, tumors, hepatitis, immunological problems, thrombosis and male infertility.
