Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family and native to the Andes of Peru and Bolivia. It normally grows between 3000 and 5000 meters above sea level, on soils very rich in natural fertilizers and nutrients. It is, in fact, a very demanding plant that tends to exhaust the soils in which it is grown.

The leaves, which emerge on the surface, look very similar to those of carrots, while the fresh, fleshy and conical-shaped root can be mistaken for a radish.

Different varieties can be distinguished based on the color of the root, the purple/red one, the brown/black one and the white/yellow one, the most common and used.

Precisely because of its root (where the nutrients it absorbs from the soil are concentrated) it is recognized as an edible and food plant, but also traditionally considered a medicinal plant. Also known as Andean ginseng or Peruvian ginseng, its roots are, in fact, used to obtain medicinal products.

Rich in glucosinolates (in particular isothiocyanates), glucosidic compounds containing sulfur, which have been recognized as having anti-tumor properties. It contains various phenolic components and saccharides, which perform antioxidant activity.

Maca roots also contain various minerals (Iron, Calcium and Potassium) and vitamins (B1, B2 and C), as well as amino acids and fatty acids (mainly macaene and macamide), while it has a very low content of cholesterol, saturated fats and sodium .

Maca is traditionally recognized as energizing and aphrodisiac properties , but it is also used to improve athletic performance and strengthen the immune system.
