Organic peeled Sicilian almonds
The almond is the seed of Prunus dulcis, a fruit tree belonging to the Rosaceae family and the Prunus genus, commonly known as almond, native to south-western Asia, introduced to Sicily by the Phoenicians (which is why the Romans called it Greek Walnut), quickly spread to France, Spain and almost all Mediterranean countries.
The word almond comes from the Latin mygdăla, from Gr. ἀμυγδάληvoice, itself of probable Semitic origin, which several scholars believe to be the Phrygian name of the Greek Cybale, which would mean the great mother.
The almond tree is a small, deciduous tree, which grows up to 7 meters in height, which has slow growth, but is very long-lived, often centuries old.
Its pinkish-white flowers bloom at the beginning of spring, it is in fact the first type of plant to wake up from winter sleep. Its fruit is a drupe, composed of the fleshy exocarp, which when ripe releases the woody endocarp contained within it, i.e. the seed, the actual almond, which is harvested between August and September.
Being made up of 50% fat (mainly monounsaturated) and having a high caloric intake, almonds are first and foremost a precious source of energy. They are also rich in vitamin E and mineral salts, especially magnesium, iron and calcium. Furthermore, among oilseeds, they are those that boast the highest fiber content (around 12%).
It is recognized for important functions such as the reduction of bad cholesterol in the blood, antioxidant properties, the reduction of anemia and the preservation of bone health.
Some studies have also shown that almonds have positive effects on those suffering from type 2 diabetes, improving insulin sensitivity.
