Organic toasted Roman round hazelnut

€3,79

The hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) is a fruit tree belonging to the Betulaceae family. The name of the genus derives from the Greek κόρυς = helmet and from Avella, a municipality in the province of Avellino, an area known since ancient times for the cultivation of hazelnuts.

The Tonda Gentile Romana quality is a protected denomination variety , cultivated in an area between the provinces of Rome and Viterbo. The presence of the hazelnut plant in Lazio has ancient origins, dating back to pre-Roman times, but we had to wait until 1400 for the first cultivations.

It begins to produce fruit around the seventh year of life and has an intermediate maturation (between August and September). Its fruit, the hazelnut, is spheroidal in shape with a slightly pointed apex. The dimensions of the entire shell are variable, between 1 and 2 cm in diameter, and its seed is slightly smaller and has a compact and crunchy texture, a very fine flavor and a persistent aroma.

They are very rich in antioxidants . In particular, after almonds they are the fruit richest in vitamins E and are a source of phenolic compounds and proanthocyanidins, antioxidant substances, considered important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Hazelnuts, like all nuts, also contain monounsaturated fats capable of lowering LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels . They are rich in proteins and fibre . A 30 g serving of hazelnuts provides more than 10% of the recommended daily amount of fiber. Finally, they have an extraordinary nutritional density of minerals (iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus...).

In short, it is no coincidence that its nutritional and therapeutic properties were already famous in ancient times, to the point that its plant, in some ancient depictions, is represented with two twisted snakes, in analogy with the symbol of Aesculapius, God of Medicine .

The toasted version is also now famous and widespread, which retains a good part of the nutritional characteristics of the natural fruit.
