The common walnut is the seed of the fruit of the Juglans Regia, a tree also known as the Royal Walnut and the White Walnut. 

It belongs to the Juglandaceae family of woody plants, present in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, mainly in Asia and America, both northern and southern, and in eastern Europe, where they were much more widespread before the glaciations.

The scientific name of the genus, Junglans, derives from the Latin Jovis (Jupiter), and Glans (acorn): acorn of Jupiter. In fact, the ancients considered the walnut to be a divine food, a symbol of abundance and fertility.

The walnut is a deciduous tree that grows up to 30 meters in height, is very long-lived, often centuries-old. 

It is a monoecious plant, because it has male reproductive organs (stamens) and female ones (pistil), but in separate flowers. In both cases they are white flowers that appear one after the other: first the male one and then the female one. 

Its fruit is a drupe, composed of the fleshy exocarp, which when ripe releases the woody endocarp contained within it. The endocarp is the seed, the actual nut. Flowering occurs in April and the fruit ripens between September and October.

Walnuts, like other oil seeds, are also rich in Omega 3, monounsaturated fatty acids, also called good fats, which bring significant benefits in reducing levels of bad cholesterol (LdL), the one that is bad for the heart, thus preventing some cardiovascular risks.

Furthermore, walnuts, thanks also to the presence of fibre, would promote intestinal health, improving the quality of the bacterial flora and functionality.

They are rich in mineral salts (magnesium, potassium and calcium in particular), vegetable proteins, vitamins (among which vitamin E stands out), some essential amino acids such as arginine (beneficial for muscles) and melatonin, very useful for regulate the sleep-wake rhythm.

Allergens: The walnut is an allergen pursuant to Annex 2 section III Legislative Decree 109/1992 and subsequent amendments. It may contain traces of other nuts, sesame seeds and sesame seed-based products.

Uses: They can be taken as a snack, or used to prepare delicious sweet and savory recipes.
