Sliced candied ginger
Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) is a plant that belongs to the Zinzebracee family (the same family as cardamom), native to the Far East.
The plant is composed of a fleshy and very branched root that develops completely underground. From the root, both long hollow and sterile stems, which on the surface transform into leaves, and short fertile stems, from which its yellow, green and purple flowers arise, rise upwards.
The name Zingiber derives from the Indian Zingibil or according to other sources from the Arabic Zind-schabil, which means root. The English word for ginger, gingifer/ginger, derives from the ancient Sanskrit srngaveram meaning horned body, which certainly refers to the shape of the root.
Its root itself has been used for centuries both as a spice and for phytotherapeutic purposes. Ginger, in fact, has various therapeutic properties: it relieves the symptoms of colds, sore throats and inflammation of the respiratory tract, soothes pain and inflammation of the digestive system and calms nausea.
Candied Ginger (with whole cane sugar) retains many of the active ingredients of fresh ginger, including gingerol, responsible for the above properties.
